AKP AND ISLAMIC POLITICS IN TURKEY

The presence of Islam in the politics and Islamism in the Turkish society is like a re-incarnation of religious consciousness which faced decisive suppression of decades. This religious isolation has been shut down in the Turkish society and the return of the religious consciousness should not be seen as a threat to the secular system of republic of turkey. Rather, it should be understood as steps toward the democratization of the country. Most of the political parties advocate that the democratization process must happen in turkey .But they are not ready to implement in the society fearing the consequences that will take place the pre dominancy of the religious consciousness.
AKP (Adelet ve kalkilmah Partisi) Islamic rooted political party is in their third term. June 12 2011 election they got 49.9 % votes. It is meant that the half of the Turkish people support the AKP and their policies both in domestic and foreign affairs. The impact of civil society movements in turkey is more effective rather than political parties there. AKP has the backing of the religious movements like Gulen movements and Nurcu movements. The economic group MUSIAD, an organization of newly emergent business persons with an Islamic bent of mind also occupied the economic field rather than secular group TUSIAD.
The corruption and the efficiency associated with the political parties and the public figures have led the civil society to choose another way to find the solutions that the country face for decades after the establishment of republic of turkey. My argument is that the emergence of AKP , which has Islamic background has been the main player in the political phase in the Turkey and the intolerance and suppression on religion and the Islamic symbols caused huge consequences in the society. Turkey’s has undergone remarkable changes during the last decade. These changes have taken place both in domestic and foreign policy spheres. During AKP regime Turkish society has witnessed tremendous amount of transformation. There is widespread perception that these changes have been inspired by the ideology of AKP which is rooted deeply in Islam, though other factors might have also played roles. Thus the study would seek to explore the dimensions of these changes.
